This past season I’ve referred to this guy as Johnny Sits-on-His-Ass and Johnny Throws-It-Up-for-Grabs, but now I’ve got a new moniker for him – Johnny Rehab.
That’s right, the news came to me sometime yesterday that Johnny Manziel voluntarily entered himself into an undisclosed rehab facility. He made the move last Wednesday, during the midst of Media Week at the Super Bowl, in an attempt to slip through the cracks without fanfare. It’s rumored that his substance problem is alcohol, but it would be no surprise if cocaine were also part of the equation.
Yesterday, I watched a few minutes of First Take and listened while Steve Smith and Skip Bayless gushed their love and admiration for Johnny Manziel while at the same time praising him for having the courage to take such a positive step in attempting to turn his life around. They were sickening. If Manziel were present in the studio, I’ll bet Bayless would’ve given Manziel a ten-second Frencher.
Balderdash.
Manziel is incorrigible.
“I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong,” Manziel said last season when it was obvious that just the opposite was true. “I’m not going to change for anybody.”
That, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is exactly the way Manziel thinks – and he’s not going to change for anybody – just like he said.
To begin with, Manziel’s a knucklehead – and he’s prone to making poor decisions. Now let’s factor in that he’s got deep-seated psychological issues; he’s a rich, spoiled brat; and that he feels even more entitled because he’s been a star quarterback for most of his life. And we can’t forget the habitual substance-abuse problems.
Whoever made the decision to select him with the 22nd pick in the 2014 draft has no eye for talent. Back when Manziel was at Texas A & M, he showed me nothing that would translate to stardom in the NFL. In my opinion, he will never be a top-flight starting quarterback in the NFL.
Before the draft, I was worried that the Eagles might draft him because he was the mobile quarterback that so many Eagles fans swear Chip Kelly needs to run his offense properly. But, as it worked out, I had nothing to fear.
I have an “unnamed source” within the Eagles hierarchy – that’s right, me, with an “unnamed source.” In fact, I have “unnamed sources” in my arsenal just like the guys you see on TV, listen to on the radio, and read in the newspapers, magazines, and online. And I ran into my unnamed source and his wife shortly after last year’s draft.
I made the sign of the cross and said “Thank god you didn’t draft Johnny Manziel.”
My unnamed source said that the Eagles never once considered drafting Manziel. That reassured me about the Eagles brain trust.
Sorry, Steve Smith. Sorry, Skip Bayless. Unlike you two, I have no sympathy, compassion, or love for Johnny Manziel. He is reaping exactly what he’s sown – and, like Johnny Rehab said, he’s not going to change for anybody.
