It was Chris Short (3-3) versus Bob Friend (4-5) in the wrap-up of the three-game series with the Pirates. The teams split a twi-night doubleheader the day before.
Friend shut out the Phillies 2-0 on May 27th in Pittsburgh.
Chris Short was making his seventh start of the season. He pitched two shutouts thus far and compiled an impressive 1.11 ERA.
The first inning was scoreless.
In the top of the second, Bob Bailey doubled with two outs. Bill Mazeroski followed with a single that scored Bailey and put the Pirates on top 1-0.
The Phillies responded in the bottom of the seconds.
Wes Covington walked. Tony Gonzalez singled. And John Herrnstein was safe at first on an error to load the bases.
Clay Dalrymple, batting just .188, came through with a two-run single to put the Phillies ahead 2-1.
No scoring in the third or the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, Tony Gonzalez led off with a double. John Herrnstein followed with a drive over the scoreboard to boost the Phillies lead to 4-1. It was Herrnstein’s second home run of the year.
Chris Short (4-3) gave up just two hits over the last seven innings to put the rubber game on the Phillies’s side of the ledger.
Bob Friend (4-6) took the loss.
The Phillies win, coupled with the Giants splitting a doubleheader with the Cardinals, allowed the Phillies to pick up ½ game and to creep within ½ game of first place.
