Zach Bowe Scores Four

The time was closing in on noon. That gave me better than two hours to take a shower, get dressed, and drive the half-hour-or-so to Cabrini College to watch my favorite grandson play lacrosse. Plenty of time. No need to rush.

But at 11:42 came a text from my favorite Ex – “Just found out that Zach’s game has been moved up to 1 o’clock.”

Well ain’t that a fine kettle of fish is what someone in Scotland might’ve said back in the 1700s.

But my comment was the R-rated version of the colloquial: “WTF?”

Feed the cats – no time to eat myself – quick shower – throw on some clothes – and haul ass.

Made it to the game with time to spare. In fact, I was the first member of my clan to arrive.

Stationed myself with an excellent vantage point of the goal where the kid’s team would be shooting during the first quarter – the kid’s team being the Rosemont College Ravens – and the kid being my favorite grandson Zach Bowe.

My timing wound up being perfect.

Just 51 seconds into the game, the kid picked up a ground ball in enemy territory and performed a quick, little spin-a-rama. He put on a burst of speed past his defender, fired a shot on goal, and Zach Bowe scores a goal – his second of the season. Unassisted. Right in front of me.

And the Ravens took a 1-0 lead over the Keystone College Giants.

Nine minutes passed.

A pass from Steve Licata to my favorite grandson. The kid makes a move, shoots, and Zach Bowe scores two goals – his third of the season. Again, right in front of me – and the Ravens upped the lead to 2-0.

But Keystone scored the next pair of goals to tie the score 2-2.

With :06 left in the first quarter, Rasool Smith put the Ravens back on top 3-2 – with Steve Licata again assisting. It was Smith’s seventh goal of the season.

The Ravens owned the second quarter –

– at 13:33 – Rasool Smith (8th) unassisted.

– at 11:55 – Justin Regan (6th) from Anthony Bottoms.

– at 11:47 – Zach Bowe (4th) scores three goals. Unassisted.

– at 9:48 – Steve Licata (6th) unassisted.

– at 3:33 – Rasool Smith (9th) unassisted.

The first half ended with the Ravens on top 8-2 and, for all intent and purpose, the game was over.

The first three minutes of the third quarter passed without any scoring.

Then the Ravens added another pair of goals within seven seconds –

Zach Bowe scores four goals – his fifth of the season – assisted by Justin Regan. Followed by a role reversal with Justin Regan (7th) scoring – and Zach Bowe assisting – and it was 10-2 Ravens.

– Keystone scored a pair of goals to trim the lead to 10-4 – but it was too little, too late.

Rosemont then put the game out of sight –

Anthony Bottoms (4th) scored unassisted.

Bobby Frtiz (2nd) from Steve Licata.

Steve Licata (8th) unassisted – the goal setting a milestone.

Justin Regan (8th) from Purnell Summers.

The game ended 15-4 Rosemont.

Kiefer Paul only had to make four saves in net to pick up the win.

In addition to scoring four goals, Zach Bowe fielded 17 ground balls and went an unblemished 18-for-18 on face-offs.

Rasool Smith, Justin Regan, and Steve Licata picked up hat tricks.

And Steve Licata – with those three goals and three assists – hit the milestone of 100 career points.

The win put the Ravens at no worse than a tie for first place in the CSAC at 1-0. The win upped the season record to 2-4 and made it two wins in a row for the Ravens – the first time in school history that the lacrosse team won two consecutive games.

The next game is a non-conference affair versus Misericordia University Cougars scheduled for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25.

zach bowe imageFor me, it was a fine experience. My favorite grandson’s team won. The kid scored four goals, picked up an assist, and owned the face-off circle.

He did get knocked on his ass once – cross-checked from behind, which drew a penalty. But lacrosse is not croquet – it’s a contact sport.
