Sunday, July 19 – First Game

Hoping to stop the losing streak before it reached two games, Gene Mauch sent Jim Bunning (9-4) took the mound to face Jim Maloney (8-9) in the first game of the doubleheader.

Play Ball:

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first:

  • Tony Taylor and Costen Shockley singled – Taylor taking third.
  • One out later, Taylor tried to steal home. But the Reds caught him in 2-5-1-2 rundown for the second out – Shockley moving to second.
  • Richie Allen walked.
  • Tony Gonzalez singled to score Shockley.

The Phils added a run in the second:

  • John Herrnstein singled and moved to second on a bunt by Bobby Wine.
  • One out later, Tony Taylor singled to score Herrnstein.

And they added two more in the third to make it 4-0:

  • Richie Allen homered (#17).
  • One out later, Clay Dalrymple singled.
  • One out later, Bobby Wine tripled to score Dalrymple.

Meanwhile, Jim Bunning was working on a two-hit shutout thru five innings. But the game started going south for him in the bottom of the sixth when the Reds cut the lead in half at 4-2:

  • With one out, Pete Rose reached second when John Herrnstein dropped his routine fly ball.
  • One out later, Vada Pinson tripled to score Rose – and then he scored when Tony Taylor mishandled the relay from the outfield.

The Reds knocked Bunning out with two more in the seventh:

  • With one out, Leo Cardenas and Steve Boros singled.

And that was the signal for Gene Mauch to replace Bunning with Chris Short (8-5) – in between starts.

  • Short gave up a run-scoring pinch-single to Tommy Harper to cut the Phils lead to 4-3.

But then Short got Pete Rose to hit into an inning-ended double-play.

Billy McCool (2-0) kept the Phillies in check in the top of the eighth, and then the Reds took the lead off Jack Baldschun (3-4) in the bottom of the eighth:

  • Baldschun walked Billy Klauss.
  • Vada Pinson tripled to score Klauss and tie it up 4-4.
  • One out later, Deron Johnson singled Pinson home to take the lead.

Gene Mauch replaced Baldschun with Ed Roebuck (2-2).

  • Don Pavletich greeted Roebuck with a two-run homer (#2) to give the Reds a 7-4 lead.

Sammy Ellis came on in the ninth and retired the Phillies 1-2-3 to earn a save (#4).

Billy McCool (3-0) got the win and Jack Baldschun (3-4) took the loss.

That made it two straight wins for the Reds and two straight losses for the Phillies.

Sunday, July 19 – Second Game

John Boozer (0-0) made his first start of the season in the nightcap. Jim O’Toole (10-4) took the mound for the Reds.

1964 imageJohn Boozer was a 25-year-old right-hander who went 3-4 in 26 games with the Phillies in 1963. He started this season with the Phillies, but was sent down to Arkansas for more seasoning after making three relief appearances and yielding eight runs on nine hits in five innings.

Now – after going 8-1 in 12 starts with the Travelers with a 2.08 ERA, eight complete games, and four shutouts – he earned a promotion back to the big club.

Play Ball:

After a scoreless inning-and-a-half, the Reds took the lead in the bottom of the second:

  • With one out, Leo Cardenas doubled.
  • Cardenas moved to third when Hal Smith grounded out, and he scored when Costen Shockley fumbled Jim O’Toole’s ground ball.

And they added a run in the third:

  • Marty Keough homered (#6) to make it 2-0.

The Phillies halved the lead 2-1 in the fourth:

  • Richie Allen doubled and moved to third on Danny Cater’s single.
  • One out later, Bobby Wine singled to score Allen.

No more scoring until the top of the ninth – and then the Phillies took the lead:

  • Clay Dalrymple singled off former Phillie Ryne Duren (0-1) – and Johnny Briggs came in to pinch-run.
  • Duren struck out Johnny Herrnstein – who was batting for John Boozer – but then Duren walked Cookie Rojas.

And that was it for Duren. With Johnny Callison coming to the plate, Freddie Hutchinson replaced Duren with lefty Bill Henry (2-1).

  • But the strategy failed when Callison hit a three-run homer (#15) to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead.

Gene Mauch brought Rick Wise (1-2) in to pitch the bottom of the ninth. Wise retired the first two batters, but then the Reds rallied:

  • With two outs, Gordy Coleman doubled and scored on a single by Pete Rose to close to 4-3.

Gene Mauch replaced Wise with Chris Short (8-5) – who also relieved in the first game of the doubleheader.

After Short walked Pete Rose to put the tying run on first, he induced Vada Pinson to bounce inti a force at second.

Chris Short got the save (#2), John Boozer (1-0) got the win, and Ryne Duren (0-2) took the loss.

The win gave the Phillies a split of the doubleheader.

Around the League:

The Giants swept their doubleheader with the Colt 45s to pick up ½ game in the standings and move into a tie the Phillies for first place.

The loss dropped the Reds 3½ games out of first place.
