1964 July 4

Saturday – July 4

1964 image“I Get Around” – recorded by the Beach Boys – hit the top of the Billboard charts and would remain #1 for the next two weeks.

On to the Action:

The Phillies scored off Jack Sanford in the top of the first:

  • With two outs, Johnny Callison walked and scored on Richie Allen’s double.

But the Giants responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half to take the lead:

  • Jim Ray Hart singled and scored on Duke Snider’s home run (#4) to take a 2-1 lead.

From there, Jack Sanford and Jim Bunning both strung together four scoreless innings. And then the Phillies tied it up in the top of the sixth against Billy Pierce:

  • With two outs, Richie Allen drew a walk.
  • Wes Covington followed with a single. Allen – off and running with the pitch – made third so easily that he kept going. Duke Snider’s throw to the plate might have nailed Allen – but it bounced in front of the plate and rolled into foul territory.

With the score tied 2-2, Jim Bunning and Gaylord Perry strung together more scoreless innings as the game moved into extra innings. And then the Phillies got to Perry in the top of the eleventh:

  • John Herrnstein singled.
  • One out later, Richie Allen tripled to give the Phillies the lead.
  • Wes Covington followed with a home run (#8) to make it 5-2 Phillies.

Gene Mauch made a quadruple switch in the bottom of the eleventh:

  1. John Herrnstein moved from first to left.
  2. Ruben Amaro moved from short to first.
  3. Bobby Wine came in to play short – replacing Jim Bunning’s spot in the order.
  4. Jack Baldschun came in to pitch – taking over Wes Covington’s place in the batting order.

Jack Baldschun struck out Jim Ray Hart and Duke Snider and retired Willie Mays on a fly to center to pick up the save (#6).

Jim Bunning (9-2) gave up the two runs on six hits while striking out nine over the first ten innings to pick up the win.

Gaylord Perry (6-4) took the loss.

Around the League: The Phillies made it three straight wins – and three straight over the Giants – to take over first place by ½ game.
