Back to the Action – The Phillies took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings.

Phillies First:

  • With one out, Richie Allen hit a home run (#12).

Phillies Second:

  • Tony Gonzalez and John Herrnstein hit back-to-back singles – with Gonzalez moving to third.
  • Then Gonzalez scored on Clay Dalrymple’s sacrifice fly.

But the Mets jumped on Phillies pitching for five runs in the top of the third:

  • With Dennis Bennett on the mound, Chris Cannizzaro led off with a single.
  • Tracy Stallard hit into a force at second – replacing Cannizzaro as the runner on first.
  • When Jim Hickman doubled to deep center, third-base coach Don Heffner sent Stallard homeward bound. Meanwhile, Tony Gonzalez chased down the ball and fired it to cutoff man Cookie Rojas – who handled the throw and relayed it to the plate. But Stallard beat the throw to cut the Phillies lead to 2-1 – Hickman advancing to third on the throw.
  • Ed Kranepool singled to score Hickman and tie the score 2-2.
  • Dennis Bennett walked Ron Hunt.
  • Joe Christopher followed with a single to score Kranepool to put the Mets on top 3-2 – with Hunt moving up to second.

When Gene Mauch visited the mound, Bennett told him that his arm was acting up. So Mauch replaced him with Ed Roebuck.

  • From the stretch position, Roebuck saw Joe Cristopher taking a big lead at first – and picked him off. But John Herrnstein couldn’t handle the throw and the ball rolled into foul territory – allowing Hunt and Christopher to move up a base.
  • Roebuck got Hawk Taylor to hit a ground ball to third. Richie Allen fielded the ball, checked the runners, and threw Taylor out at first for the second out.
  • But Charley Smith hit a two-run single to make it 5-2 Mets.

From there, it was mostly Mets in the 11-3 drubbing of the Phillies.

The Mets scored four more times in the seventh:

  • After Dallas Green retired the first two hitters on ground balls, Jim Hickman doubled.
  • Green walked Ed Kranepool.
  • Ron Hunt hit a two-run triple to make it 7-2.
  • Joe Christopher hit a two-run homer (#5) to make it 9-2.

The Phillies got one run back in the seventh:

  • With one out, John Herrnstein tripled and scored on Clay Dalrymple’s single to trim the gap to 9-3.

But the Mets added runs in the eighth and ninth.

Mets Eighth:

  • Charley Smith doubled.
  • One out later, Tracy Stallard singled and Smith scored to make it 10-3.

Mets Ninth:

  • Joe Christopher led off with a triple.
  • One out later, rookie Dave Bennett – the younger brother of Dennis Bennett – wild-pitched Christopher across the plate to end the scoring at 11-3.

Gene Mauch used 19 players and 7 pitchers – but very little worked as Tracy Stallard (4-7) pitched a complete-game victory. Dennis Bennett took the loss (7-4).

Worse yet, Dennis Bennett hadn’t pitched in six days in an attempt to refresh his arm – but he left the game in the third inning with arm trouble.

Around the League – The Giants lost to the Braves 4-3 – so the Giants and Phillies remained tied for first place.
