Back to the Action – The Dodgers scored off Dennis Bennett in the top of the first:

  • With one out, Maury Wills doubled.
  • One out later, Wills scored on a single by Tommie Davis.

The Phillies bounced back in the bottom of the first:

  • Cookie Rojas led off with a double, stole third, and tied the game 1-1 when he scored on Richie Allen’s sacrifice fly.

Then they took the lead in the bottom of the second:

  • John Herrnstein led off with a single.
  • One out later, Phil Ortega issued back-to-back walks to Ruben Amaro and Dennis Bennett to load the bases.
  • Cookie Rojas squeezed Herrnstein home to make it 2-1 – Amaro and Bennett moving up a base as well.
  • Two pitches later, Amaro scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.

The Dodgers tied the game in the top of the seventh:

  • Frank Howard led off with a single.
  • Ken McMullen followed with a home run (#1) to make it 3-3.

The Phillies answered in the bottom of the seventh:

  • Cookie Rojas led off with a single.
  • When Richie Allen singled, Rojas rounded second and headed for third. Willie Davis came up throwing from center, but Rojas slid under the tag at third – Allen moving up to second on the play at third.

With runners on second and third and nobody out, Dodgers manager Walter Alston replaced reliever Jim Brewer with Ron Perranoski. But the move went sour:

  • Perranoski walked Johnny Callison intentionally to load the bases.
  • And Perranoski walked Wes Covington to force home a run and give the lead back to the Phillies at 4-3.

Dennis Bennett retired the Dodgers in order in the top of the eighth, but Gene Mauch sensed that he was tiring. So Mauch lifted him for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the eighth and replaced him with Ed Roebuck.

Roebuck – who’d yet to give up a run on the season – retired the Dodgers in order in the ninth to preserve the victory and maintain his pristine 0.00 ERA. He picked up the save (#7) – his fourth save in the last six days.

Dennis Bennett (7-3) got the win – which made it four straight for the Phils – and Jim Brewer (0-1) took the loss.

Around the League – The Giants lost to the Pirates 3-1 – Bob Veale (5-3) topping Bob Hendley (4-4) – to drop 1½ games out of first place.
