Monday – May 11
Ray Culp took a one-hitter and a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh. But after he retired the first two batters on a strike out and a come-backer to the mound, things suddenly went south for him:
- Johnny Lewis singled and moved to second on a passed ball.
- Chris James reached first on hit an infield single – Lewis holding second.
- Julian Javier stepped to the plate hitting just three points above the Mendoza Line at .203 – with just one home run and eight RBIs. But the numbers didn’t matter when he smashed a three-run home run (#1) into the leftfield bleachers to put the Cards on top 3-2.
Ray Sadecki (1-3) – who was coming off a 1-0 heartbreaking loss to the Pirates his last time out – picked up his first win of the year.
Ray Culp (1-3) took the loss.
Around the League – The Giants lost to the Colt 45s by a score of 4-1 as former Phillie Turk Farrell (4-1) picked up an efficient win. So the Phillies lost no ground and remained one game behind the Giants.
The Cardinals win kept them tied with the Braves for third-place ─ but they moved to within one game of the Phillies – three games out of first.
1964 – The Year the Phillies Blew the Pennant was originally published two years ago – but please don’t purchase it right now. I’m in the final stages of streamlining the original to make it a better reading experience.
I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
