Wednesday – June 17

The Cubs got to Jim Bunning in the first inning:

  • With one out, Jimmy Stewart doubled.
  • One out later he scored on Ron Santo’s single.

But the Phillies took the lead in the top of the second:

  • Tony Gonzalez singled and Roy Sievers walked.
  • One out later, weak-hitting Bobby Wine hit a three-run homer (#2) to put the Phillies on top 3-1.

The Cubs scored again in the third – before both teams matched two-spots in the fifth.

  • Joey Amalfitano tripled and scored one out later when Billy Williams tripled.

Phillies Fifth:

  • With one out, Richie Allen walked and Tony Gonzalez singled – Allen advancing to third.
  • Roy Sievers singled – Allen scored and Gonzalez moved to third.
  • Clay Dalrymple hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Cubs Fifth:

  • Joey Amalfitano walked.
  • One out later, Billy Williams homered (#16) to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Williams’ home run convinced Gene Mauch to replace Jim Bunning with Dallas Green – who got the Cubs 1-2-3.

But the Cubs tied it up at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth with Green on the mound – and then began to pull away:

  • Dick Bertell and Billy Cowan singled.
  • Bob Buhl laid down a bunt. Dallas Green fielded the bunt, but his throw pulled Roy Sievers off the bag at first. Buhl was safe at first to load the bases.

Out went Green and in came Jack Baldschun.

  • Joey Amalfitano singled and the runners moved up a base – Bertell scoring to tie the game.

Baldschun got out of the jam by inducing three straight ground balls – two force-outs at the plate and a come-backer to the mound.

Cubs Seventh:

  • Ernie Banks doubled off Baldschun, moved to second on Billy Ott’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on a wild pitch.

Johnny Klippstein replaced Jack Baldschun in the eighth:

  • With one out, Jimmy Stewart walked.
  • Billy Williams (#17) and Ron Santo (#9) hit back-to-back homers to finish the scoring at 9-5 Cubs.

Bob Buhl (7-3) picked up his second win of the year over the Phillies – with a save (#7) by Lindy McDaniel.

Jack Baldschun (3-3) blew a save opportunity in taking the loss – which ended the Phillies winning streak after four games.

Around the League – The Giants beat the Reds 3-2 to deadlock them with Phillies in first place ─ 3½ games ahead of the Pirates and Reds.
