Saturday – May 2
Five Phillies pitchers surrendered 17 hits in an 11-2 drubbing by the Braves that evened the series at one game apiece:
- Ray Culp – 2 hits and 3 runs
- Dallas Green – 3 hits, but 0 runs
- Ryne Duren – 3 hits and 1 run
- John Boozer – 6 hits and 6 runs
- Jack Baldschun – 3 hits and 1 run
Eddie Matthews and Joe Torre led the Braves with four hits each – Lee Maye and Hank Aaron each got three.
Matthews homered (#2) off Boozer.
The Braves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held the Phillies scoreless until the top of the ninth. It was the most lopsided loss of the year for the Phillies and ended the winning streak at four games.
Ray Culp (1-2) took the loss while Bob Sadowski (2-2) threw the five-hit, complete-game victory.
Around the League – The Giants beat the Dodgers 5-4 in 11 innings in front of another fine turnout of 53,290 fans at Dodger Stadium. That win – coupled with the Phillies loss – allowed the Giants to pick up a game and move to within one full game of the Phillies.
1964 – The Year the Phillies Blew the Pennant was originally published two years ago – but please don’t purchase it right now. I’m in the final stages of streamlining the original to make it a better reading experience.
I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
