Monday – May 4
The Phillies traveled from Milwaukee to St. Louis to begin a two-game series with the Cardinals.
It was Dennis Bennett (2-1) versus Bob Gibson (2-0) in the first game of the series and Cards’ pitching dominated this 9-2 win – but not the way it had been drawn up on the drawing board.
Going into the bottom of the fourth, Bob Gibson came to bat holding a 5-1 lead – having given up one run on three hits – when fate changed the course of events:
- With one out, Jack Baldschun hit Bob Gibson with a pitch – and Gibson was injured sufficiently that he had to be replaced by a pinch-runner.
- Carl Warwick hit a home run (#2) to make it 7-1 Cards.
Roger Craig (2-0) replaced the injured Gibson to begin the top of the fifth and gave up just one run on five hits over the final five innings in picking up the win. Dennis Bennett (2-2) took the loss.
That loss made it three straight losses for the Phillies – two by lopsided scores of 11-2 and 9-2.
Around the League – This loss – coupled with the Giants 3-2 victory over the Colt 45s in 12 innings – dropped the Phillies into second place. One game behind the Giants.
1964 – The Year the Phillies Blew the Pennant was originally published two years ago – but please don’t purchase it right now. I’m in the final stages of streamlining the original to make it a better reading experience.
I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
