1964 imageThe Pirates won the rubber game of the series when Dick “Ducky” Schofield stroked a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Phillies 6-5.

In a game when both managers used five pitchers, the Pirates scored first in the bottom of the second:

  • With one out, Donn Clendenon doubled.
  • After Dennis Bennett issued an intentional walk to Bill Mazeroski, Jim Pagliaroni singled to score Clendenon and make it 1-0 Pirates.

The Phillies took the lead in the top of the third:

  • Cookie Rojas singled and moved to third when Johnny Callison singled.
  • Richie Allen walked to load the bases.
  • Danny Cater hit a two-run double to take the lead 2-1 – leaving runners on second and third.
  • Gus Triandos hit a two-run single to make it 4-2.

But Dennis Bennett couldn’t hold the lead and the Pirates tied the game in the fourth:

  • Bill Mazeroski and Jim Pagliaroni singled.
  • Willie Stargell pinch-hit for Bob Veale and struck out, but the ball trickled away from Gus Triandos. The catcher retrieved the ball and threw Stargell out at first – but the runners moved up a base.
  • Rick Wise hit Ducky Schofield to load the bases.
  • Manny Mota singled to score Mazeroski and Pagliaroni to cut the deficit to 4-3. Schofield advanced to third.

Gene Mauch replaced Wise with Dallas Green (1-0).

  • With runners on first and third and one out, Green got Roberto Clemente to hit into a force-out at second – but Schofield scored to tie things up 4-4.

The Phillies and Pirates both scored in the eighth:

Phillies eighth:

  • Singles by Wes Covington and Tony Taylor, and an error on Ruben Amaro’s ground ball loaded the bases.
  • Roy Sievers‘ sacrifice fly gave the Phillies a 5-4 lead.

Pirates eighth:

  • Willie Stargell’s lead-off homer (#7) off Jack Baldschun tied the game 5-5.

After Al McBean retired the Phillies in the top of the ninth, the Pirates won the game in the bottom of the ninth:

  • Jim Pagliaroni walked.
  • Willie Stargell singled – his second hit of the game – to send Pagliaroni to third.
  • Ducky Schofield hit a walk-off single to end the game with a 6-5 Pirates victory.

Al McBean (2-0) picked up the win and Jack Baldschun (2-1) took the loss – both in relief.

Around the League – The Giants won another 2-1 squeaker over the Cardinals to move one full game ahead of the Phillies. Bob Hendley (4-3) got the win and Curt Simmons (6-3) absorbed the loss.

The Pirates moved into third place just one game behind the Phillies.
