Sunday – June 7
The Phillies scored in the bottom of the first:
- After Bob Hendley hit Tony Taylor and walked Cookie Rojas, Johnny Callison singled. Taylor scored and Rojas drew a throw advancing to third – Callison taking second on the throw.
Alvin Dark wasted no time replacing Hendley with Bobby Bolin.
- Bolin walked Richie Allen to load the bases.
- After Wes Covington popped to third, Roy Sievers’ sacrifice fly scored Rojas to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.
From there, the Phillies tried to ride Jim Bunning’s right arm the rest of the way.
The Phils added a run in the eighth:
- Johnny Callison tripled and Richie Allen singled.
Jim Bunning had given up only five hits over the first eight innings and the game looked like it was going into win column. Gene Mauch sent Ruben Amaro and John Herrnstein into the game as defensive replacements.
But the Giants ended Jim Bunning’s bid for a 3-0 shutout in the top of the ninth:
- Orlando Cepeda doubled.
- Former Dodger great Duke Snider – who was hitting just .170 – hit a home run (#3) over the right field wall to cut the Phillies lead to 3-2. It was the 406th home run of Snider’s career.
- Bunning struck out Tom Haller for the first out.
- Jim Ray Hart tied the game 3-3 with a home run (#4).
Gene Mauch then made a double-switch:
- Ed Roebuck (1-1) came in to pitch.
- Tony Gonzalez came in to play centerfield.
Roebuck got pinch-hitter Harvey Kuenn to fly to right and Jim Davenport to ground to short to end the inning.
Bob Shaw retired the Phillies in order in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings – and the Giants manufactured a run in the top of the tenth:
- Ed Roebuck hit Jesus Alou.
- Chuck Hiller singled.
Mauch replaced Roebuck with Jack Baldschun.
- Willie Mays popped to the catcher for the first out.
- With Orlando Cepeda batting, Alou made a bonehead play by wandering too far off second – and Baldschun picked him off.
- Now with Chuck Hiller on first and two outs, Baldschun walked Cepeda.
With Duke Snider due up, Gene Mauch brought lefty Chris Short in to pitch – in between starts. His ninth relief appearance of the season.
To counter, Al Dark sent the right-handed Del Crandall up to pinch-hit for Snider.
- Chris Short walked Crandall to load the bases.
- And Short walked Tom Haller to force in a run to give the Giants a 4-3 lead.
Mauch replaced Short with Dallas Green, and Green retired Jim Ray Hart to end the inning.
Bob Shaw got into a two-out jam in the bottom of the tenth, but Al Dark called on Billy Pierce to put out the fire.
The Giants won 4-3 to sweep the series.
For the Phillies, that was five straight losses – four straight losses against the Giants – and five losses out of six games against the Giants on the year.
Around the League – The series sweep reversed the Giants and Phillies positions in the standings. The Phillies were in first place leading by 1½ games when the series began – but now they found themselves in second place trailing by 1½ games.
