Another in the seventh:

- Johnny Callison singled and Taylor scored to end the scoring at 5-0.
Chris Short retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to complete his four-hit, eight-strike-out whitewashing of the Cards.
Thanks to four complete games and three shutouts, Chris Short’s ERA was a snappy 1.78 ERA – and he was establishing himself as a top left-hander in the league.
Mike Cuellar (0-1) – who would go on to become a 20-game winner with the Baltimore Orioles four times – absorbed his first loss in the big leagues.
Sunday – June 28 – Second Game
On to the Action: The Cardinals scored for the first time on the day in the bottom of the first:
- With one out, Lou Brock doubled and scored on Bill White’s single.
The Phillies tied it up in the second:
- Richie Allen doubled and scored on Danny Cater’s single.
The Cards took the lead in the fifth:
- Curt Flood walked and Lou Brock singled.
- One out later, Ken Boyer was awarded first on catcher’s interference to load the bases.
- The runners moved up when Bob Skinner hit into a force at second – Curt Flood scoring and Lou Brock taking a wide turn around third. After the force, Wine threw home to check Brock – but Clay Dalrymple muffed the throw and Brock scored to make it 3-1.
The Cards padded the lead in the seventh:
- Lou Brock, Bill White, and Ken Boyer hit back-to-back-to-back singles – Brock scoring and White stopping at second.
- One out later, Dick Groat drove White home with a single to make it 5-1.
The Phillies tried to rally in the top of the eighth:
- With one out, Tony Taylor walked and Cookie Rojas singled to put runners on first and second.
- One out later, Richie Allen singled to score Taylor and trim the deficit to 5-2.
Ray Sadecki retired Danny Cater on a force to end the rally – and then the Cards put the game away in the bottom half with Jack Baldschun on the mound replacing Ray Culp:
- Tim McCarver singled.
- Ray Sadecki laid down a bunt and Baldschun muffed the pickup – McCarver going all the way to third.
- Curt Flood singled to score McCarver – Sadecki moving to third with a play and Flood advancing to second on the play at third.
- Bill White hit a two-run single to make it 8-2.
Ray Sadecki (8-6) got the win – his second in two starts against the Phillies – and Ray Culp (4-6) took the loss – giving up 11 hits and five runs – three earned – in seven innings. And Jack Baldschun was no better – giving up three hits and three runs – one earned – in his one inning in relief.
The split of the doubleheader split the four-game series – but the Cards still held a commanding 6-3 lead in the season series.
Around the League: The Giants beat the Dodgers 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel between Ron Herbel (6-3) and Don Drysdale (10-7). That win – coupled with the split of the doubleheader by the Phillies – dropped the Phils ½ game behind the Giants.
The Cards were mired in sixth place – 8½ games back.
