From the Desk of Eagles Outsider Barry Bowe
I have a greater urgency than most Eagles fans because I’m 73 years old, I’ve already cheated death three times, and I want to see the Eagles win a Super Bowl before I kickoff – pun intended.
My first game was Chuck Bednarik’s first game during his rookie season when I was six years old. Since then, I’ve attended hundreds of games at Municipal Stadium, Shibe Park, Franklin Field, the Vet, and their new stadium.
So, please, don’t you dare call me a hater because I have negative thoughts about the 2015 edition of the team.
I want the Eagles to win – but can separate fact from fantasy.
Between you and me, this is a bad football team – with a bad coach/GM – and a bad quarterback. If any of you think that Chip Kelly or Sam Bradford will ever lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory, I respect your opinion and your faith, but believe you’re sorely misguided.
To begin with, Chip Kelly is overmatched. After nearly two full seasons as head coach of the Eagles, he’s still either clueless about life in the NFL – or he’s learned about the league yet stubbornly refuses to adapt. His way or the highway?
It’s time for him to hit the highway:
- Perhaps a trade to the Titans.
- Going back to college.
- Or Jeff Lurie – pardon my French – growing the balls to send him packing.
Without one of the above happening, we’re doomed to pretty much what we’ve seen since last Thanksgiving:
- abysmal play at times.
- a lot more losing than winning.
And that’s without getting into Chip’s lack of prowess as a GM.
Moving on to the quarterback, Sam Bradford’s average at best. Enough excuses. He doesn’t have the arm or the leadership abilities to take a team to the Super Bowl. Perhaps if he played with the Steel Curtain or the 1985 Bears, he could deliver a championship – perhaps. But he doesn’t. He plays for the 2015 Eagles – and hopefully he doesn’t play for the 2016 Eagles.
Without Chip Kelly and Sam Bradford, the Eagles will move forward. With them, we’ll be marking time.
Procrastination is not the answer.
The time is now to make changes.
